Epilepsy Action Shredding, Archiving & Storage Feature Heading

Recently we had one of our shredding clients – Ison Harrison – help us out with a feature, looking at how we worked with them. We thought it was so useful, we’d try rope in some of our other great clients to do the same. (It’s fine, we got the hint you were bored of listening to just us….!)

So, thank you Epilepsy Action, for helping us out!

Set up almost 70 years ago, Epilepsy Action is a UK charity that aims to improve the lives of people with epilepsy. 600,000 people in the UK have epilepsy. Thankfully, many have their seizures controlled by medication and can get on with living life. However, too many people continue to have active seizures. This can result in children struggling with school, and adults unable to drive or access employment. It can ultimately result in severe disability and even death – around 1,000 people in the UK die every year as a result of having epilepsy.

Epilepsy Action is always on hand to provide expert advice and support, raise awareness and fight for change where it is needed. You can donate to Epilepsy Action online here.

The charity has been a client of McCarthy’s for over four years, and now has a range of services with us – document management, shredding and self-storage. Fingers crossed that means we’re doing ok!

So, how did Epilepsy Action begin working with McCarthy’s? Sue Mitchell, communications manager at Epilepsy Action, explains: “We initially needed somewhere to store our archived documents as we were seriously running out of space at our head office in Leeds. Obviously, location was important, and McCarthy’s was local to us – and convenient in terms of access and parking. It was also good that members of the team could just drop in if we needed to call anything out of archive, which does happen on occasions, and that happened quickly and efficiently.”

When we launched Safe Shred in 2011, Epilepsy Action also moved its confidential waste disposal service across to McCarthy’s. The charity now has a self-storage unit with us too. “We use the self-storage facilities to store our range of branded charity Christmas cards, which are obviously a big fundraiser for us” said Sue. “We access the 75 sq ft unit around five times a year to help us manage our stock. The unit has always been easy to access – getting stock in and out was easy, and you can go at any time, to suit you. It also feels secure, so we don’t worry about safety. We’d really struggle to store these in our offices, where space is at a premium. It’s also good that we can change the size of the storage unit if we need to, scaling up or down as appropriate.”

Explaining a bit more about what the charity does, Sue said: “For a small charity, we have a big job to do. We provided support, advice and information to around two million people in 2017. Many of those people face a range of difficulties related to having epilepsy themselves or a family member with the condition. Sometimes, just a chat on our free helpline can be enough to change someone’s life. We receive a lot of feedback telling us that we were a literal lifeline at a time when people had given up hope.

“Sadly, a phone call can’t solve everything. We work hard to inform people and to campaign for changes in the law or standards of healthcare. We also do a lot of work tackling the many misunderstandings about epilepsy that can result in discrimination. Examples of our work include fabulous new animated films and an information pack for parents of young children with epilepsy, funded by Morrisons. We have developed an innovative online learning course to help people understand their epilepsy. It provides important coping strategies to help with the day-to-day effects of the condition.

“As a registered charity, we are very dependent on people donating money to fund this life-changing work. Wonderful people all over the country run, climb mountains, hold tea breaks and bake cakes to raise sponsorship. Others find committing a small monthly donation by Direct Debit suits their desire to build a better future for people with epilepsy. Every penny counts!”

So, when you spot some charity Christmas cards from Epilepsy Action this festive season – pick up a pack (knowing they’ve been stored at McCarthy’s) and help this charity fund its vital work for years to come.

Testimonials

McCartheys were there to take much of the stress out of what was a very difficult time for myself and my family. All the staff were patient and understanding of our dilemma and did all they could to help.
The storage facilities were safe and very secure with easy access .
All in all a painless experience.
Would highly recommend.

Really friendly and helpful customer service and explained everything clearly. Easy to reserve and new facility in York seems well secured and easy to access, with handy equipment to use (particularly with extended hours - at additional cost). Only minor comment for improvement during these times would be to have sanitise stations near the keypads as these are touch points for everyone using the facility.
