God’s Own County has been the birthplace of many culinary masterpieces including Parkin, Yorkshire Tea, Wensleydale cheese and perhaps the most loved of all, the magnificent Yorkshire pudding!
A mixture of milk, eggs and flour combine to create a deliciously crispy bite enjoyed by those across the globe. But did you know that the 5th February 2017 marks National Yorkshire Pudding Day? Each year on the first Sunday in February, revellers come together to pay homage to the crowning jewel of Yorkshire delicacies. As a Yorkshire company, born and bred, we will of course be celebrating this special day with puddings aplenty.
All this talk of Yorkshire got us thinking about our roots, the humble beginnings of McCarthy’s and our ties to this fabulous part of the world. Many of you might know that our founder, Yorkshireman Mick McCarthy launched the business from a terraced house in Lomond Place, Leeds. Things began to flourish and we began moving props and scenery for theatre companies all over the country, although we always remained based in our home city.
Following those successful and exciting years in the 70’s, we moved to our current headquarters in Meanwood, Leeds, a place that we’re very proud to still call home! Once here, our fleet of vans and team of valued employees expanded more and more and we began moving residents across the county and beyond. With this came an account to work with a legendary Yorkshire company, Yorkshire Water.
As we developed we listened to our customers and their wants and needs, this time opening our first McCarthy’s Storage World in 2005. A safe, secure and clean place for local people to keep their most precious items. Five years later we grew further in the region, opening a Storage World in Harrogate before expanding once more to Wakefield in 2015. Our trio of Storage Worlds now work to meet the needs of customers in each respective area.
As well as working in the region, we also like to give back to our local community wherever we can. Most recently this has been through a partnership with St Gemma’s Hospice, a Leeds based charity. Following the Christmas rush we teamed up with the amazing team there to collect old Christmas trees and carefully dispose of them. Local people using the service then donated to St Gemma’s as a thank you and the money raised will go towards caring for those in need from the Yorkshire area.
After that trip down memory lane we’re feeling more proud of our Yorkshire roots than ever – who would have thought this blog began with the humble Yorkshire Pudding (tasty and powerful!)
We love the area we live and work in and are proud to employ lots of friendly Yorkshire folk too. Now all there’s left to do is send us pictures of your Yorkshire puds this Sunday and remember to hashtag #YorkshirePuddingDay
