Did you know that today marks ‘Use Less Stuff Day’? Perhaps not, but you will be pleased you do now!
The awareness day comes around once a year and was originally established as part of a campaign to help with maintaining and improving the state of the environment. Organisers used the day to encourage the public to cut back on waste, recycle consistently and walk, cycle, or share rides to work and school. Celebrities and huge organisations such as Greenpeace have since jumped on board along with companies implementing events in the work place and schools teaching children more about the world we live in.
Use Less Stuff Day also encourages us to consider what we really need in our lives and is strategically placed just before Christmas to get us thinking about what we buy for our loved ones each festive season. We are urged to consider the excess we each have in our homes when buying the newest tech products each year, filling children’s bedrooms with toys aplenty and finding our cupboards overflowing with kitchen gadgets that often do similar things – or only get used once a year!
This got us thinking about how we can encourage McCarthy’s customers to use less stuff and help the environment whilst also clearing out their homes and maintaining a harmonious living environment.
Those wishing to do their part for the environment might be interested to know that all the paper we receive through our shredding schemes is recycled. Any of the confidential documents received will result in zero landfill as all the shredded paper is recycled into every day products such as toilet rolls and hand towels.
In the manufacturing process of recycled paper:
- 74% less air pollution is generated
- 35% less water pollution is generated
- 58% less water is required
- 64% less energy is required
- One ton of high-grade recyclable paper can substitute for approximately 3 tons of wood in making new paper products
And if you fancy a clear out, why not use our self storage as a mini trial? Take those unused kitchen appliances, toys, furniture and tech and box them up for us to keep safe in one of our self storage units in Leeds, Harrogate or Wakefield. If in six months you haven’t missed them it might be time to say farewell more permanently – and make some money from online sales or hand them over to charity. If you do, however, find you suddenly can’t live without the previously unopened ice cream maker, you can get access 24/7 to pick it back up!
We also have a range of storage options perfect for students needing a safe place to keep their items out of term time, businesses looking for a place to keep stock and whatever else you might want a little extra space for!
