Taking the stress out of moving

Jun 19, 2019 | Moving

Moving house can be a stressful time, there’s no doubt about it. That’s why it repeatedly makes the list of ‘the most stressful life events you can go through’ – picking and securing the house of your dreams, and ensuring your home is someone else’s first choice can put the pressure on a bit!

But the move itself doesn’t have to be fraught. Yes, solicitors and mortgages and delayed completions can certainly have their tricky moments, but for the move itself, here at McCarthy’s removals we’ll always try and take the worst of the worry away by being with you every step of the way.

That’s why we thought we’d put together nine top tips to help you ensure your move is as stressfree as possible!

  1. Plan ahead. Good removals firms get booked up far in advance, especially in peak periods of Spring to Autumn. As soon as you know you’re moving, it’s worth getting in touch and asking us to provide you with an estimate. When it then comes to booking a move date, we are then ready to go as quickly as possible.
  2. Get a seal of approval. Always make sure you choose a BAR (British Association of Removers) recommended removals firm. You don’t want to risk trusting all your worldly belongings to a cowboy firm or have the nightmare of them not turning up on the day. A BAR approved firm will come with assurances of the quality of their service.
  3. Storage solutions. Consider whether storage might be a useful addition to your moving plan. Whether it would be good to declutter ahead of the move, you are downsizing and you’re not sure what you might want to keep, or you’re moving into a house that requires some renovations, self storage might come in handy. Container storage is more appropriate for larger amounts which you won’t need to access. If you’re having to move out of one house before your new home is ready, we can store your items in containers which remain closed until you are ready to receive them at your new property.
  4. Consider letting someone else do the hard work. We’re not just talking about the move itself – it’s the preparation too. Packing your own belongings can be difficult – every other item tells a story, how much should you pack in one box, what’s the best way to keep your prized wine glasses safe and so on… Our removals experts know exactly what they’re doing. They will pack up your belongings in no time at all, and every last one will be safely and appropriately packaged.
  5. Think about the tricky items. Do you have something you suspect might be difficult to move? Something large, heavy, awkward or valuable? Speak to your removal team so they can come up with a plan – we’ve moved just about everything you could think of in our time, so we’ll be able to find a way.
  6. Plan for the ‘just in case’. Moves can be tricky things in terms of timing. Sometimes chains collapse, new builds are delayed and surveys throw up some unexpected problems. Take out insurance to cover you should plans need to change.
  7. Park it. Safe, convenient and legal parking is going to be vital at both ends of your move. Speak to your removals team about whether parking permits need to be secured, and if there may be any access issues with a large van. There’s always a way round it, but it’s always best if we’re prepared!
  8. Keep move day simple. If possible, ensure pets and children are safely with someone else come move day – it will be much easier all round if you’re not worried about one or the other escaping or getting upset by the unusual activity.
  9. Have essentials on hand. Keep any essential items, such as bedding, medicine, snacks, a torch, nappies, pet food and important documents, in a box in your own vehicle. You don’t want to get into your home and have to start searching through piles of stuff to find what you need. It also helps to have a kettle, tea, coffee, mugs and some biscuits to one side too – moving is thirsty work all round!
