June 28th marks National Insurance Awareness Day. What?? You don’t celebrate it annually in your home?
Of course, it’s not exactly a public holiday/decorate your house kind of day, but here at McCarthy’s we’re fully on board with the rationale behind it. It makes sense to check every so often that the insurance you have in place still meet your needs. After all, values go up and down, circumstances change and families grow.
The earliest known insurance dates back hundreds of years – if not thousands. Marine insurance, through a proper broker, first came into existence as early as the 1500s. In the 1600s the first fire insurance company was formed. It makes sense that as humans gained more possessions, better homes and invented sophisticated modes of transport they wanted more ways to ensure they were kept safe or could be replaced if needed.
Here at McCarthy’s we also place great importance on insurance. For anyone using our self storage centres in Leeds, Harrogate or Wakefield, we insist they have some form of insurance in place. Just as you would insure your contents at home or, as a business owner, at your place of work – or even if you were travelling on holiday – it’s only sensible to take precautions for your belongings wherever they may be.
Of course, we take every possible measure in terms of security and general maintenance to ensure your items are kept safe and sound, but the unexpected nature of accidents is just that – unexpected and unpredictable!
We can provide you with specialist self storage insurance through our expert broker Basil Fry, which is underwritten by the Royal Sun Alliance and approved by the Self Storage Association (SSA). It’s specially designed for items held in storage – and we can run customers through the details to ensure it provides adequate cover, which based around the value of the items contained in the unit. Remember to tell us if things change dramatically in terms of what you’re storing, as it may impact on your insurance – and always stick to the dos and don’ts in terms of what you are and aren’t allowed to store!
Other people choose to include their storage unit in their home insurance policy, if it allows them to. We just require proof that it is definitely covered within the policy – we don’t want any of our customers having any unwelcome surprises at an already difficult time.
We also offer forms of insurance on the removals side of things too. We know that everything doesn’t always go to plan when you’re planning a move. Sometimes chains collapse, buyers pull out and life plans change – all of which can mean your move is cancelled or delayed, and sometimes with very short notice. Customers can ask us about the Postponement/Cancellation Waiver which has you covered until 5pm the night before your planned move day, just in case things need to change. It’s extra reassurance in a situation which is quite often out of your control.
So, Happy National Insurance Awareness Day everyone! Where’s the balloons and cake?!
