The 16th September marks World Ozone Day, the inspiration for which stems back to the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol.
The awareness day has been marked since September 1994 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. The organisers’ main intention is to increase understanding of the depletion of the Ozone Layer, whilst seeking ways to preserve, defend and rebuild it. Each year people from all walks of life flock to Montreal to attend lectures and discuss ozone protection.
Increased awareness of these environmental issues has led to further investigation and action, some of which has been incredibly beneficial. Researchers from our very own University of Leeds along with teams from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, have confirmed the first signs of an increase of ozone, which shields life on Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. The improvement is down to the success of the 1987 Montreal Protocol – the act which banned the use of chlorofluorocarbons in aerosols and fridges.
Here at McCarthy’s we take caring for the environment very seriously and strive to do all we can to positively contribute to maintaining and improving the earth we live on. Our shredding service guarantees the secure destruction of all of your confidential documents whilst also pledging to create zero landfill.
All of the shredded paper we receive through our various shredding services is recycled into everyday products such as toilet rolls and hand towels. Undertaking a policy to consistently recycle allows us to make a larger impact than you might think. In the manufacturing process of recycled paper:
- 74% less air pollution is generated
- 35% less water pollution is generated
- 58% less water is required
- One ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees
- 64% less energy is required
- A ton of high-grade recyclable paper can substitute three tons of wood in making new paper products.
With our Safe Shred service, businesses that need regular shredding are able to keep a secure bin onsite. Once full, our shredding truck will come to your building and dispose of all paper on-site – or we can take it to our secure shredding facility. At home, shredders can still enjoy the ease of a professional service. For just £10 (plus VAT) we will post sacks out to your home which arrive complete with a confidential seal. After that all you need to do is fill up the sack and drop it back to us at our premises on Meanwood Road.
Each method comes complete with a certificate verifying that all documents have been disposed of safely in a CCTV controlled premises and have also been properly recycled. As a business, this can be of great benefit for proving your own green credentials.
So this World Ozone Day and throughout the rest of the year you can rely on McCarthy’s to continue striving for a more environmentally friendly world.
