Going Green this Earth Day

As Earth Day approaches (22nd April), here at McCarthy’s we’re thinking about all things green.Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event which celebrates the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The idea is to focus the world’s thinking on the natural environment and each doing our bit to protect it. Whether it’s using less disposable plastic, planting a tree or reducing your carbon footprint, everyone can do something.

According to the Earth Day Network our planet is currently losing over 15 billion trees each year—that’s 56 acres of forest every single minute. That’s a staggering statistic, when you think about it. We should all be doing what we can to reduce our paper usage, and shredding with McCarthy’s Safe Shred is a great way to do just that.

We take the confidential waste from organisations across the region, and it is sent off to be repurposed into paper towels, facial tissues and even toilet paper. You can even send us your unwanted confidential papers as an individual customer – we send out a sack, and for just £10 plus VAT, we will shred your documents and send them off to be recycled. We can even provide a certificate of destruction and recycling as proof! Not only are you doing your bit for the environment, but it’s also ensuring your data is kept safe from falling into the wrong hands.

Shredding isn’t the only way we try to do our bit. You may remember, earlier this year we worked with St Gemma’s Hospice to recycle Christmas trees. We donated our vans and drivers to collect trees from across the city of Leeds, which were then properly recycled rather than being sent to landfill. As an extra bonus, the scheme also raised much needed funds for the wonderful St Gemma’s, which is a cause very close to our heart.

Another way we try to be as green as possible is on the transportation side of things. We have a lot of vans out on the road – once you start to look, you’ll probably start to see the McCarthy’s logo quite a bit while you’re out and about! Between the removals lorries, shredding vehicles, archiving trucks and self-drive vans we rack up quite some miles. But our dedicated team in the office spends a lot of time ensuring that when we are out on the road, the journey is as efficient as possible.  We combine trips where possible, make sure we travel the most efficient routes, and that our staff drive at optimum speeds. It’s all going on behind the scenes!

So, this Earth Day what small steps do you think you could make? After all, lots of small steps can add up to a big difference…
