Last month we introduced a new feature all about getting to know some of our wonderful behind-the-scenes (and sometimes in front of them) team members. First up was Ann, our lovely move co-ordinator.
Next on our list to introduce to you is Stephanie Butler, our fantastic shredding co-ordinator. *waves*
The scoop on Stephanie
Name: Stephanie Butler
Age: 41
Where she lives: Seacroft, Leeds
Families/pets: We have a big step family, including 4 kids in total, 3 huskies, 2 cats and my partner Craig
Hobbies: Attending live music events, going on long walks with the dogs, home cooking (which of course leads to eating which we also enjoy!). In fact, we are massive foodies in our house – Jamie Oliver is our favourite!
Now, one thing you might notice about a lot of our members of staff is they tend to stick around! For her sins, Stephanie has been with us for 15 years. So, that means she started at McCarthy’s the same year that Girls Aloud were formed, The Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers topped the box office, Daniel Radcliffe was just entering the Chamber of Secrets as Harry Potter, and Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake officially broke up. We can’t decide if that makes it seem like decades ago or just yesterday.
Anyway…. Stephanie has undertaken roles across the company. Starting off in removals, she worked in that area for quite some time, booking appointments, dealing with clients’ day-to-day queries, booking in jobs and any aftercare required. Subsequently she has a good understanding of how the removals and container storage section of the company works, which is always handy and means she’s a great help to the wider team.
Stephanie’s current role as shredding co-ordinator involves overseeing all areas of the department, from quoting prices, booking jobs in, planning daily schedules and routes for the drivers, and looking after regular contracts, such as the one we have had with Leeds City Council for the last four years. She’s also the one that sorts out all the invoicing – thanks Steph!
When we asked Stephanie what she enjoyed most about her role she said: “No two days are the same, so there’s definitely no time for getting bored! You’re always kept on your toes, which I like. It can be tricky juggling everything – especially fitting in ad hoc jobs when you’ve already got a full schedule of regular collections to do. But we’ll always do our best and I like a challenge!”
Another challenge for Stephanie is when people haven’t got a clue how much shredding they need doing. She added: “I don’t blame people – before I started this role, I think I’d have struggled to picture what a tonne of paper looked like! So quite often people phone up saying they have a pile of paper to get rid of, but they don’t really know how to quantify it beyond that. But it’s not a problem, we can always figure it out. What’s one man’s paper mountain is just a molehill to another!”
And although we can’t really compete with her dream job – husky cuddler (actually Stephanie, I’m not sure that’s a real job?!) – we think she likes us really. And she particularly likes the fact we’re all foodies – when you come to the McCarthy’s offices there’s often some culinary expertise being showcased, whether it’s baked goods to share or an spectacular lunch to make everyone jealous.
With Stephanie we know our clients couldn’t be in safer hands – although their waste paper should probably fear for its life…
