Getting ready for a Spring move

McCarthy's Removals Van Close

It may not quite feel like it yet, but we’re quickly moving towards Spring. At the end of the month the clocks will go forward (which means we lose an hour’s sleep, sorry…). But the bonus of that is lighter evenings and a feeling that Summer is well and truly on its way. If we get one this year.

Spring is traditionally the busiest period for us as a removals company. People often want to get winter out of the way before thinking about the next big thing. And, of course, properties tend to look a bit nicer against a bright blue sky and with light and airy rooms – as well as gardens springing into life. Who wants a load of viewers trekking mud through your home every time someone wants to take a look round?

So, if you’ve decided that now is the time to get thinking about your next move, then what steps do you need to be taking?

  1. Get ahead on the Spring cleaning and DIY – to get the best price for your property, you’re going to need to get it looking its best. Time to catch up on those DIY jobs and to do that deep clean you’ve been putting off.
  2. Declutter – having less stuff on display will automatically make your home look more spacious and roomy. That’s where self storage comes in! It’s a great way of temporarily getting rid of some items and any excess furniture but keeping it safe ready for when you move into your new home. We have secure storage centres in Leeds, Harrogate and Wakefield (and soon to open in York) and you can choose from a range of storage unit sizes to find the one that suits your needs. All of our self storage centres have ample free parking, lifts and equipment such as trolleys so you can unload and transport your belongings easily. And you can come and go as you please, meaning if you realise you’ve stored something you need, it’s not a problem to retrieve it. Ask about our shredding service too if you have paperwork you need to get rid of, but you don’t want to risk it being used for identity fraud.
  3. Finding the dream team – ask around for recommendations of estate agents and solicitors and check out online reviews to find the ones which you feel are best for you.
  4. Getting ready to move – once the sold sign is in place, it’s time to line up a removals company. At McCarthy’s we can offer three ways to give you a quote – we have a quick online quote service, but to give a more detailed quote we’d need to come and see you or do a video estimation. We need to see what will need moving and talk about things such as access and parking, and it also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions.
  5. Pack it up – our removals teams can also offer a packing service. It’s fast, efficient and safe – our experts have decades of removals experience between them, so they know how to pack items as securely as possible. If you’re packing yourself we can help with all the boxes, tape and bubble wrap you might need in our packaging shops!
  6. On the day – let the removals team do all the hard work, but make sure you’ve clearly labelled what’s in all the boxes and where they need to go in the new house. Make sure you’ve taken meter readings, organised a postal redirection and have let everyone know your new contact details. Make sure you’ve considered how best to move any pets and take a box of essentials with you in your own vehicle. This will make it easier at the other end – so include things like kettle, tea and coffee, medicines, toilet roll, pet or baby food, handwash, torches, small toolkit, phone chargers etc.
  7. Relax and enjoy your new home!
