How safely destroying confidential paperwork can help us be greener

18th March marks Global Recycling Day 2020 – definitely a day we should all be getting behind.

How we should be looking after our environment is a topic which is increasing in awareness all the time, helped by eco-warriors such as Greta Thunberg and the wise words of individuals like our national treasure David Attenborough. Yet are we doing enough?

Here at McCarthy’s, we try our best to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Our McCarthy’s Safe Shred service is one such example where we can really make a difference.

Our shredding service is there to help businesses, and individuals, dispose of their confidential waste in the safest way possible. We have a dedicated shredding facility in Leeds which covers businesses across Yorkshire. If a business needs a regular shredding service, we can provide them with special lockable bins to dispose of anything which will require shredding. We then collect those sealed bins at a frequency to suit the client in our secure, mobile vans and bring them back to our warehouse to allow them to be shredded. We can also do one off collections, perhaps linked to a Spring Clean or office move.

Once the waste is shredded, it’s baled up and then the fun stuff begins! We send all of our waste to be recycled within the UK – none of it is sent to landfill or overseas. It’s usually used to make paper towels, facial tissues and toilet roll – particularly useful given current shortages!

With the current GDPR guidelines, taking care of your confidential waste is more important than ever. If it includes any details of employees, customers or clients, it needs to be properly disposed of. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a multi-site law firm or a solo trader, your responsibilities are the same.

Home shredders are often too slow and too prone to overheating to cope with any quantity of paper. In fact, we also offer a shredding service to individuals and small businesses. We can send you out a sealable sack which you fill with your paper, seal and return to us at our branches in Leeds, Harrogate or Wakefield, so we can destroy and recycle it in the same way we do with the waste gathered in our mobile shredding vans.

If you use our document management service, we can even arrange an automatic shredding date for your papers. If you have documentation which you know will be no longer needed after a certain date, we can set an expiration on it, when it’s automatically retrieved from our archive warehouse, and safely transported to be shredded.

We also offer WEEE recycling – safely wiping and disposing of your electronic waste, such as old laptops, hard drives, USBs or phones, to ensure any information held on it cannot be accessed by anyone up to no good.
