Failing to Fly the Nest

It’s no great secret that home ownership is something people are coming to later in life than ever before.

In fact, research last year showed that young adults now are more likely to still be living with their parents than at any time over the last two decades.

The number of 20-34 year olds still living at home has increased by almost a quarter in the last 20 years, according to the Office for National Statistics, with 3.3 million failing to fly the nest. One in five 25-29 year olds and one in ten 30-34 year olds are still living with one or both parents.

Back in the 1990s, 30 per cent of 20-25 year olds owned their own home – but this has now dropped to fewer than one in 10.

The reasons behind this aren’t rocket science. Following the boom in property prices in the noughties, young people have been priced out of the market, with mortgages ever harder to secure. Larger deposits are required (an average of £34,000 in the UK, according to lender Halifax) meaning that for many people the only chance to build up enough savings is to live at lower costs with the folks. Which also goes part way towards explaining why the average age of a first time buyer in the UK is now 30 (or 32 in London).

So, for parents who might have been thinking of downsizing once the kids packed off to college, it might require a rethink.

We’ve noticed a trend for homeowners in this situation using our self storage facilities. Children’s bedrooms that had been designated something else for a while – studies, gyms, dressing rooms, even media rooms – are now needed again for young adults to return to. But what do you do with the running machine, desk or sofa the room has acquired? Hopefully the living arrangements won’t be forever, and then you can return to using your spare room to watch the latest blockbusters in 3D or to practice your yoga.

That’s where self storage comes in. It’s ideal as a temporary place to store your belongings, and is much more secure than leaving them in a garage (along with the fact your returning offspring has probably also brought another car into the household). Costs start at just £6 a month (much cheaper than finding your child somewhere else to rent), and you can hire the space from anything for a month to several years. You can gain access as and when you need it, you hold the only key and it’s got state of the art security in place. We don’t even mind if you want to do a spot of yoga in there, or retreat with a good book to the sofa you’re storing for a bit of peace!

We can also help with a van to get everything safely to us – we appreciate not everyone’s family car can fit an exercise bike in the boot!

Your son or daughter may also bring with them belongings there just isn’t room for at home. Pots and pans, pieces of furniture, bedding, university books – things which will be useful or wanted once they do get the keys to their own place, but which take up unnecessary space at yours if you’re already feeling like the walls are closing in. Put them in self-storage for a few months, and they can even add to it as they start to buy more things for a potential new home.

So, if this situation is sounding familiar, why not get in touch to see what we can do to help. But no – unfortunately – we can’t set a storage unit up for your child to live in! Nice try….
