You may need short-term storage for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you’re moving to a new house or changing offices? Maybe you’re just having a clear out, or you are having building work done on your home?
Whatever your reason is for requiring extra storage space, thankfully there are a variety of options to choose from. In this article, we hope to offer the best solutions to suit your needs and budget.
1/ Declutter other areas at home to make space
This route can involve some hard work but clearing out your home is always a job worth doing.
Decluttering your home to create meaningful storage space means more than going through a few cupboards though. It’s about looking at your furniture, how your whole house is set up, and being ruthless with the things that you don’t need or use anymore. Try to pick one room that you would like to clear to use for your short-term storage, and then carefully plan where things are going to go.
2/ Create additional storage space at your house/garage
We’re thinking a new shed or a trendy garden cabin, or maybe something smaller scale like some fitted wardrobes or loft storage. It’s not necessarily the cheapest option, but you are left with a great useable space once your short-term storage needs have been met. If the budget is not there for this type of additional space, then scour websites like Gumtree to see if anyone is giving away a garden shed. If you’re handy with a toolbox these are often easy to reassemble.
If you have a garage, think about whether you are using the space to its full advantage. Bikes could be stored on hooks on the wall, freeing up valuable floor space. Perhaps you could think about creating a mezzanine shelf above part of the space too?
3/ Ask a friend/family member if they have space
If it’s really short term, then friends and family might be happy to help you out if they lots of space or an empty garage. It’s definitely worth an ask – what have you got to lose?
If you get a positive response, then try to make it as tidy as possible for your generous friends. Pack your things up neatly in waterproof, stackable boxes and agree a clear date by which you will have picked it up by.
4/ Use a local self-storage solution
This is often the simplest and stress-free solution to short-term storage issues. After all, you’re not reliant on anyone else and you don’t have to give up part of your house to piles of boxes.
But what is self-storage? And what does it involve? Well, here at McCarthy’s, we have units ranging in size from a telephone box to a tennis court. They are all clean, secure and totally flexible, and rent starts from £6 a week, so it’s affordable too. We have facilities in Leeds.
Whether you want to clear out some furniture or declutter you house to sell it, or if you want to rent a room to a lodger for a few months, you can rest easy that your things are being looked after.
