Recycling – Because you’re worth it…

Monday 25th September marks the start of the annual Recycle Week.

This year’s theme from organiser Recycle Now is ‘Recycling – it’s worth it’. A great sentiment, and one we wholeheartedly agree with!

Recycling can take all manner of forms, and here at McCarthy’s we’re happy to help in all kinds of ways.

Self-storage can sometimes be the stepping stone to some serious recycling – or upcycling, or sending on to a new life in a new home! If you’ve downsized, or had a good clear out when you’re moving home, chances are you’ve found some items you may no longer need. Self storage is a great way to trial a temporary separation to see if now might be the time to admit you’re ready for a permanent farewell. So, perhaps that ice cream maker you only used once could go to a new home at your neighbour’s house. Maybe your collection of teapots is destined for a car boot sale? Those baby clothes would be welcomed by a charity shop. And maybe that old chest of drawers could be given a new lease of life by someone with an artistic touch? All great ways to recycle and reuse!

Maybe you’ve got boxes of old paperwork stacking up in the garage just waiting to be destroyed. But there’s always something better to be doing on a weekend than standing over a domestic shredder feeding through bank statements from 2005 one sheet at a time! Why not get in touch about our home shredding service? We can arrange to send you a sack – once it’s full, simply use the confidential seal and bring it to our Meanwood Road site, and we’ll make sure it’s properly shredded by our giant machines – in fact we’ll even give you a certificate of destruction to prove it, just as we would one of our business customers. But you can also feel good about choosing the green option, as here at McCarthy’s we recycle all our shredded paper – well over 350 tonnes a year.

Once the paper has been destroyed beyond any potential salvaging (which can still happen with paper shredded on a home machine), it is sent off to our partners to be recycled into something new – paper towels, toilet roll and facial tissues more often than not. So next time you dry your hands in a washroom, consider how you may be using confidential paperwork from a top secret government agency. Or it may have been an electric bill from Mrs Smith down the road.

As well as a certificate of destruction, we can also provide a certificate of recycling. Maybe not something you’d have on proud display at home, alongside your son’s football trophies, but if you are in business it can prove useful to help towards any green certifications and accreditations you might be hoping to achieve.

So, if by shredding with us you can save that little bit more from landfill (although we don’t call 360 tonnes ‘a little bit’ – it’s about the same weight as 50 T-Rexs) – wouldn’t you say it’s definitely worth it?
