What not to store in self storage

Jun 8, 2016 | Storage Info

Whether you’re a consumer or a business, there are thousands of uses for self storage – and our earlier series of business case studies have shown just how versatile it can be!

That said, there are definitely some things we’d rather you didn’t store with us. When you sign up to self storage we will ask you what kinds of things you’ll be keeping in there – we’re not just being nosy (honest), we need to make sure everyone is safe!

So the following are no go’s we’re afraid:

  • Anything flammable or toxic – that might include petrol, gas, solvents, paint, chemicals, waste products, oil, acids, fertilisers, cleaning agents – although that list isn’t exhaustive. It’s probably toxic waste not for storage
fairly self explanatory why, but we have a duty of care and therefore anything which is a fire risk, or could make people ill, needs to be kept somewhere more appropriate.
  • Fireworks – for the same reason as above, fireworks are not permitted in the storage units – we don’t want any accidental fires.
  • Anything living – animals or humans are not allowed! Of course you’re more than welcome to come and access your belongings whenever you want and to stay as long as you need, but units cannot be used as a place to live or to keep animals.
  • Food and drink – anything which might perish and attract pests should not be kept on site. Food in tins is fine, but avoid anything like bags of pet food which might not be so well sealed. This also includes plants – a self storage site is not the place to keep greenery and expect it to thrive!fresh food not for storage
  • Stolen or illegal goods – fairly obvious, but we better say it!
  • Guns or any kind of weapon – again, hopefully that’s obvious, but we’re not licensed to hold any such items.

Although we won’t stop you, we’d also recommend you don’t keep currency, deeds or irreplaceable works of art in the storage centre – there are probably more suitable places, like a safety deposit box, for such important items!
