How to help your house move go as smoothly as possible

Jul 12, 2021 | Moving

Moving house is often said to be one of the most stressful things you can do. We think that can be true – but that it can also be made a lot easier by getting the right experts on board to help you out. From efficient estate agents and solicitors and brilliant brokers to a really good removal firm, these people manage the process of moving home on a daily basis and can help you get safely settled in your new home.

From a removals’ perspective, as a removal firm in Leeds with over 50 years’ experience, we pride ourselves on being helpful, friendly and efficient. Whether this is a business removal or a home removal we want your move to go as smoothly as possible. We’ve pulled together our top tips for a smooth move.

  • Always assume there will be delays somewhere in the process. It’s very rare that things will go through without any kind of hiccup – but accepting that that is quite normal and doesn’t mean things can’t progress is going to save you a lot of stress.
  • Be prepared. Get all the documentation you need ready before they’re needed – e.g. proof of identification, agreement in principle on the mortgage, proof of cash and so on.
  • Make sure you plan in advance. You want to be speaking to removals companies as soon as you sell your home. You won’t have a move date sorted but you can find the removal firm you want to use and they can provide you with a detailed quote based on your home and how much you need moving (and to where!). We know a great removal firm in Leeds
  • You get what you pay for. This is applicable to all the experts you’ll need to get your sale through. You may be tempted by the cheap solicitor or cheap removal firm, but these things often end in tears. When it’s a transaction of this value – or when a company is moving everything you own – you want to choose someone reputable and reliable.
  • Keep on the case. You may need to chase people, particularly when the property market is busy, as it has been lately. Make sure everyone’s teams up and down the chain are on it.
  • Pack up early – or call in the experts. Packing yourself takes a long time – you’re sorting as you do it, you’re getting held up with nostalgia and arguing over whether you need to keep those baby toys for a few more years. Calling in the experts can make a lot of sense. Our packing service will get everything quickly and safely packed away with the minimum fuss. Much less stressful! We even provide all the boxes, specialist equipment and bubble wrap, so one less thing to have on the to do list! If you need to get your own boxes, check out our specialist box shop. Don’t be tempted by cheap boxes, as they won’t be strong enough for your heavy items and you risk things breaking.
  • Consider storage if the need arises. Sometimes dates don’t tie in and your new house isn’t ready in time for when you need to vacate your current home. Or sometimes your purchase falls through – but you don’t want to lose your buyer. We can offer a storage solution for that. We’ll pack away your items as we would for any move, but they go straight into containers which are sealed and then stored safely at our secure storage facility. We then bring them back you at the address of your choosing, once you’re ready. We also offer self storage units in Leeds, Harrogate, Wakefield, Huddersfield and York if that would be helpful to you during your move.
  • A stress-free move day. Ask someone to look after your pet so you’re not worried about them dashing out of the open door and they’re not stressed by having strangers in the house. You might prefer to organise childcare too.
  • Label EVERYTHING. We can’t over-emphasise this point enough. It will make your life so much easier at the new property. Make sure it’s clear where the boxes need to go in the new home so the removal team can put everything where it needs to be.
  • Have an essentials kit. Keep everything you might need in the first 24 hours in a box or suitcase in your own vehicle. That might include a change of clothes, torch, medicines, pet or baby food, kettle, toiletries, handwash, a screwdriver, some lightbulbs etc.

If you’re looking for a reputable removal company in Leeds, Yorkshire or beyond why not get in touch? We can definitely help make your move go as smoothly as possible.
