50 good deeds – can we help you?

As you hopefully know (we’ve not been particularly quiet about it!), this year marks McCarthy’s 50th Birthday. Happy birthday to us! (if you want to buy us a cake to celebrate, we won’t say no….)

As part of the celebrations we decided to set ourselves a little challenge – we would do 50 good deeds before the end of the year, to help local people, charities, communities and groups in whatever ways we could.

Our teams set to it, thinking of things they could do – from individual challenges to team events to donations and collections galore.

Some of the bigger things we’ve done included sponsoring two local community events – the Kirkstall Festival and Ilkley Carnival. Both are hugely popular with families and are a great free event to be enjoyed. We particularly liked the fact we were sponsoring the beer tent at Kirkstall. Not sure how that came about…

We’ve helped charities out in a range of different ways. We lent St Gemma’s Hospice one of our vans and some of our team to help collect Christmas Trees to be recycled, raising much needed

funds to help the valuable work they do. We’ve provided free storage space for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Candlelighters. We’ve held coffee mornings for Macmillans, worn jeans for Genes and will be donning our Christmas jumpers to raise cash for Save the Children. We’ve helped members of the Outwood Stroke Association have a day out. We’ve arranged all manner of collections – towels for Wakefield’s Flushdyke Kennels, books for the Zikomo Trust in Malawi, food bank donations, unwanted glasses and sleeping bags and warm coats for the homeless.

Many of our employees have taken on their own challenges too. Sarah and Lesa slept out at the Royal Armouries in Leeds for Simon on the Streets. Barbara spent a day volunteering with The Zone. Vicky and Paul volunteered at Harrogate Homeless Project. Ann participated in a collection for Macmillan at Asda. Our very own storm-trooper Wayne donned his Star Wars costume and visited Leeds Children’s Hospital to help 4-year old Matthew mark the end of his radiotherapy.

We’re keen to help out local sports teams and individuals too. We sponsored a player on the Leeds Grammar School rugby tour, and sponsored a ball at a benefit rugby match. We’re quite close to signing a deal to sponsor a local youth football team – but if your team needs a helping hand, give us a shout!

We’ve tried to undertake random acts of kindness – from handing out baked treats to customers on National Cupcake Day and Easter eggs for the kids (at Easter, obviously), to surprising customers with a high street gift voucher to give them a little helping hand.

The countdown is now on – only a couple of months left of our birthday year! We’ve still got a few acts of kindness to complete, and a few more to decide upon. So, if you have any suggestions, or ideas of how we can help, why not get in touch? Drop us a line on 50thbirthday@mjmccarthy.co.uk or get in touch via Twitter @McCarthys_Leeds. Let’s end the year with a bang!

Testimonials

McCartheys were there to take much of the stress out of what was a very difficult time for myself and my family. All the staff were patient and understanding of our dilemma and did all they could to help.
The storage facilities were safe and very secure with easy access .
All in all a painless experience.
Would highly recommend.

Really friendly and helpful customer service and explained everything clearly. Easy to reserve and new facility in York seems well secured and easy to access, with handy equipment to use (particularly with extended hours - at additional cost). Only minor comment for improvement during these times would be to have sanitise stations near the keypads as these are touch points for everyone using the facility.

Really good service and nice units. Easy access, great location, nothing to fault
