If you have a small home it’s easy to become obsessed with space and storage. In fact, living in any house with children, and their ever growing numbers of toys, can make you do likewise!

At McCarthy’s we’ve compiled some helpful storage tips to make the most of whatever space you have. And of course, there’s always the option of self storage for any pieces you just can’t make room for – from furniture you want to hang on to, just in case, to knick knacks that are too precious to part with but can’t currently find a home where you’re living.

McCarthy’s top 10 storage tips for small spaces:

  • Utilise foldaway furniture. Consider chairs that tuck entirely under tables, or tables that fold away or can be folded up onto the wall. Creating more floorspace will instantly make your home look bigger, and free up more space for other items.
  • Choose multi-purpose furniture. You can buy coffee tables which house secret storage within them. Have a storage bench and put comfy cushions on top so it doubles up as extra seating. Nests of tables allow you to use them when needed, but hide them away when they’re not.
  • Create distinct ‘areas’ in open plan living. Split one room into separate areas by using block storage. Whether it’s bookcases or low level shelving, which can also double as a desk or table, you can combine storage with getting more of a sense of which each section of room is used for.
  • Use your walls. Think vertically! Hooks and shelves allow you to free up floor space. Hang pots and pans rather than taking up valuable cupboard space. Can your TV be wall mounted, allowing you to get rid of the TV cabinet and replace it with storage?
  • Make the most of any under the stairs space.                                                                                                     storage space under stairs                                                                                           If there’s a cupboard, install shelving and stackable boxes to help you maximise the room. If there’s currently no cupboard, it may be some shelving or a cubby can be installed.
  • Baskets and Boxes. Use baskets and boxes to help provide somewhere to store bits and pieces neatly. Whether it’s on shelves, under chests of drawers, under the sink – think creatively!
  • Maximise hidden or ‘dead’ spaces. This could be under the bed – get some proper storage boxes and you can easily use it to store clothes, books or paperwork. Or is there space at the end of your bath for a small cupboard, some shelves or a towel rail?
  • Downsize the technology. Technology is getting smaller – make the most of it. Do you need a PC and desk, or could you swap for a laptop and foldaway table?
  • Heating options. Underfloor heating can allow you to lose bulky radiators – and help you gain valuable wall space for more storage.
  • Don’t forget the backs of doors. Hooks or over the door shoe storage can help provide valuable extra space. As can hanging toy storage units – they don’t have to be used for toys!

Excellent service all round. The ladies in the reception at Harrogate were professional and friendly, the storage unit itself was modern, easy to access and exactly what I needed to store some of my belongings during a house move, cannot fault this facility at all.

Extremely great service

Overall safe and effective storage although my unit occasionally leaked when it rained. The continual fee increases during Covid were unacceptable and my complaints received no reply. Compulsory insurance issued by McCarthys is another rip off factor.
