What’s under your bed?

Some research caught our eye this week. A survey put out by ‘digital shoe box’ and memory-keeper LifeTile revealed that a third of us prefer to store our most valuable documents in a (non-digital) shoebox, tucked away under the bed. Almost half (45%) opted for a filing cabinet or safe, one in 10 opted for keeping them in piles around the house, and just 6% said they kept them online.

We found this interesting reading – and in fact when we thought about it, we weren’t that surprised. We probably do all have boxes full of documents dotted around our homes. And our businesses for that matter – how many times have you wondered how on earth anyone manages a paperless office?

But what else should we do with them? You could (and probably should in some cases) scan them, and keep them electronically, but a lot of people like a hard copy too, or they may be a requirement.

But when it feels like our homes and offices are getting bogged down under piles of paperwork, maybe it’s time for a proper Spring clean. Do you really need those bank statements from 10 years ago? Do you need to keep invoices that you’ve also scanned in electronically? Can you even find your birth certificate or passport under the mounds of other papers you’ve been collecting? Do you even know what half of it is now?
