Offering a helping hand to Homeless Hampers #ItsNiceToBeNice

Jul 10, 2019 | Storage Info

We were absolutely delighted to get a mention in an entirely unexpected story in the Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper this week.

A few weeks ago we were approached by a fantastic charity called Homeless Hampers. A non-profit making organisation which has been running for four years, they rely solely on donations and self-funding to do their marvelous work – providing food, clothes and other essentials for those sleeping on the streets.

They support the homeless and less fortunate communities in Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield at the moment, although they are looking to expand. They provide homeless shelters with food and clothes and encourage people that want to be housed and sign post them to the relevant services able. Once people are housed, they then offer them assistance to keep them in their properties, whether they need items, or maybe a shoulder and a helping hand.

Each and every person at Homeless Hampers is a volunteer, and they all have day jobs to also keep them busy. But with the motto of #ITSNICETOBENICE, it’s no wonder they’re doing such amazing work despite busy lives.

Obviously, with the nature of the work they do, they hold a lot of stock – things like clothes, donations, toiletries, cold drinks, and their outreach trolleys, which they use to take items out onto the streets. The charity was devastated to find that the storage space they had been using, in a room provided by a church, was no longer going to be available.

Tina Suryavansi is a member of the charity. She explains: “We put an appeal out for help – we were really worried. Several people mentioned McCarthy’s so we got in touch. Had McCarthy’s not come to our rescue, we would have been at a point where we would have had to stop taking donations of items we require to help us support our homeless friends in Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield.”

Of course, we were only too delighted to step in and help Homeless Hampers with a suitable self storage space in our Leeds facility. We’ll keep their items safe and sound, and as with all our customers, they’re free to come and go to suit them, as only they have the key to their unit – obviously doing the work they do, it can be any time day or night.

Tina continued: “The storage space is ideal and just perfect for our needs. We are so grateful for the support McCarthy’s has given Homeless Hampers – without it we would have had to stop taking donations of clothes and other essentials, which would have had a massive impact on the help we could provide our homeless and less fortunate friends. We remain humbly grateful for the support McCarthy’s has given us to help us continue the work we do.”

And we remain humbled by the amazing work the charity and its volunteers are doing.
