Extend or store?

Space. The final frontier, so someone once said.

But we’re not talking about the infinite depths of the universe here – we’re talking about having enough room for all your ‘stuff’.

It’s no surprise that many of us can sometimes feel a bit like the walls are closing in – a typical home, with people, pets, furniture, tech and all your worldly belongings, can soon start to feel like it’s just too small.

So, just move to a bigger place, right? Sometimes that’s the answer. But with it costing, on average, £12,000 to move (taking into account fees and taxes), without even the jump in mortgage to consider, it’s not a decision many of us take lightly.

Which is why lots of people choose to extend or create extra space where they are. Loft and garage conversions, extensions, conservatories – all can give you that extra space you need. A popular trend is to build a garden room, which can be used as a workspace for those who work from home, or a place for hobbies, keeping fit or just relaxing.

All can be good options, depending on your home and its suitability. A well thought out garden room, leaving a good size garden, can add 5-10% to the value of your home – but it will cost upwards of £10,000 to build. And as you’re not planning on moving, it’s really about whether it helps you get the space you need.

If none of those seem like the perfect option for you – how about self storage?

People use our self storage units for all kinds of reasons. For some, it’s simply for storage, to keep some of their belongings, freeing up room in their home. That can also be the case alongside loft or garage conversions – you’re still going to need somewhere to store all those suitcases, boxes of old photos and the camping gear!

For other people, self storage is somewhere they can indulge in a hobby. Perhaps your hobby involves craft, and there’s mountains of materials you need to keep – a self storage unit can be the perfect place to keep them, and to restock as you need to.

Many people use self storage units in relation to their business, particularly with the rise in online retailers – ideal for storing stock, or it can be used as a ‘pick and pack’ location. We can organise broadband and phone connection in your storage room, and there’s also heating and lighting so you can work happily there with everything you need, any time.

Whether the storage unit is a temporary or permanent arrangement is up to you, but there’s no long term leases required. So, if you do decide to have that extension, you can store your furniture with us for just a few weeks while it gets done!

With one all inclusive bill there’s no hidden costs and we can be flexible with storage unit sizes – we’ll finds the right fit for you. If you then find it too big or too small, no worries – we can find you another one! Prices start from just £6 a week, so definitely a saving on the big move or building work!

We have self storage centres in Leeds, Harrogate and Wakefield, all easily accessible and with ample parking. All of our storage centres have lifts and trolleys to help you get your belongings to your unit with ease. CCTV and state of the art security keeps your unit safe – and only you have access to it. We can’t even get in there! And you can get in whenever you need, so you don’t have to worry that you will forget something important.

So next time you’re trying to work out how to create more space – it might be time to think outside of the box – and more inside of the storage unit!

McCartheys were there to take much of the stress out of what was a very difficult time for myself and my family. All the staff were patient and understanding of our dilemma and did all they could to help.

Really friendly and helpful customer service and explained everything clearly. Easy to reserve and new facility in York seems well secured and easy to access, with handy equipment to use (particularly with extended hours - at additional cost). Only minor comment for improvement during these times would be to have sanitise stations near the keypads as these are touch points for everyone using the facility.
