The dos and don’ts of winter removals

Here at McCarthy’s HQ we have been considering the British winter and the chilly months ahead of us. As a removals company, we often find that customers are concerned that winter house moves are difficult or even impossible. However, this simply isn’t true. With some advice from us and a little bit of planning a December move can be just as straight forward as an August one. Just don’t count on a beer in the sun in your new garden after all the hard work!

We’ve put together a few tips that cover planning, considerations and options to ensure your move gets off to a flying start.

Start with a plan

Any house move requires a certain amount of planning and those taking place during the winter months are no different. You can begin speaking with one of our trusted advisors months in advance to book a provisional date and begin proceedings long before the packing begins. Check out our house moving check list for advice on what you need to be doing right through from a month before the move up until the big day and beyond.

The pre-Christmas rush

People across the country will be considering what they would like Santa to bring come the 25th December and many are going to be hoping for a new home. This thought process combined with a ‘new year, new me’ outlook can account for a significant increase in house sales ahead of Christmas. With this in mind it’s important to book your moving team with us as far in advance as possible. It may also be a good idea to ask family and friends to mark off your moving date, many hands do make light work after all!

The other pre-Christmas rush

As well as an increase in those moving house before Christmas, the other rush occurs when we try to fit EVERYTHING in to December. If our lives weren’t busy enough, the festive season brings about social events, shopping, hosting, nativity plays, lots of cooking and pressure a plenty. Make sure to consider whether a house move on top of this busy season is doable for you. If it is, make sure to get your Christmas shopping done in advance and don’t feel guilty when turning down the odd invite. Who could blame you when an evening in your new pad is so inviting?

Icy conditions and dangerous roads

As the weather grows colder it often becomes more difficult to navigate the roads. As much as it may be an inconvenience, movers must be aware that adverse weather conditions could get in the way of your plans. Make sure to discuss with your removals team what a possible plan B could look like and remember that your safety, and the safety of the team helping you move, must always remain the priority. We recommend downloading a clever app on your phone or keeping up via the good old weather forecast for the latest updates.

Look after your nest

During the winter, it becomes even more important to pay special attention to the practicalities of being a home owner or renter. If you’re leaving a house empty or swapping between properties for a while, this is particularly important in winter months. Make sure to turn off the water supply at your old house, if the temperature suddenly drops you could risk a burst pipe and a heavy plumber’s bill. Keep your heating on a timer and at a reasonable level to ensure that the house stays relatively warm and most importantly dry. Unplug all electrical devices at the wall – should a power surge take place you can rest peacefully in the knowledge that the home you’re leaving, or moving in to will be safe. Finally, make sure that any home you’re responsible for is carefully secured. Break-ins increase massively in the winter months so check that you have locked every window and door properly.

Get those bills in order

You don’t want to be moving into a new home in winter and finding the lights or heating don’t work! Get in touch with the person you are buying your home from, or if you’re moving in to a new property or renting, speak with the building or letting agency. Make decisions on whether you would like to stay with the current supplier or shop around for a different deal and set up an account. In turn make sure you let the suppliers at your old property know that you have moved out, do final meter readings and cancel payments. You don’t want to be paying to light up someone else’s home with festive cheer this year!

Make sure essentials are easily found

If move day has arrived, make sure all of the essentials you need are easily accessible. You may want warm clothes, bedding and the all-important kettle available at the drop of a hat. If you’re moving in very close to Christmas also check that presents are in a safe and memorable place, nothing would be more heartbreaking than being unable to find the pressie you’ve been dying to give come Christmas morning.

A winter move doesn’t need to be stressful, but if you have any worries you can rest assured that McCarthy’s are on hand to ease any worries you have. Give us a call on 0113 262 3000 to have a chat about any questions you might have.

5 Stars

Really friendly and helpful customer service and explained everything clearly. Easy to reserve and new facility in York seems well secured and easy to access, with handy equipment to use (particularly with extended hours - at additional cost). Only minor comment for improvement during these times would be to have sanitise stations near the keypads as these are touch points for everyone using the facility.
