Celebrating the women of McCarthy’s this International Women’s Day

Written by on March 8, 2018

International Women's Day Banner

Today is International Women’s Day, which celebrates women’s achievements, whilst calling for gender equality. Although to some it may seem like a recent idea, the day actually dates back to the early 1900s, bringing together political groups, companies, charities and individuals to do their bit.

This year there’s a call to #PressforProgress, motivating and bringing together friends, colleagues and communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.

On this important day we wanted to celebrate some of the wonderful women who work in the McCarthy’s team. They work very hard in many different roles to make sure our customers get the best experience possible, and we’re very grateful.

Many of our customers will talk to Ann O’Sullivan, in her role as move co-ordinator. She helps arrange visits, types quotations, deals with customer queries, takes bookings, and also helps out on the self-storage side of things, setting up accounts.

She’s worked with us 14 years – despite wanting to be a vet or a police officer when she was a child, she seems to have found her forte here at McCarthy’s. Her job demands attention to detail, understanding and being a good listener – all of which she has in abundance. When we asked what she enjoys most about her job, it’s the fact that no two days are the same, and every day brings a different challenge to solve.

Louise Thompson has worked with us as accounts assistant for two years, helping to keep our suppliers happy (and paid!), and keeping on top of things in the finance department. Her role takes organisation and accuracy, along with someone who can work alone and as a team – and Louise fits the bill (excuse the pun) perfectly. When we asked Louise what she enjoyed about her role she said “I enjoy working at McCarthy’s because my role is continually developing and I feel that there’s room for progression. Also, I’m a working mum and given great flexibility when required, which is fantastic.”

Our Wakefield self-store manager is Wendi Wright. Funnily enough, like Ann, she wanted to be a vet as a child too – maybe we attract those who like working with animals?! She oversees the smooth running of the branch, managing staff, recruitment and training. Quick thinking, a problem solver, excellent customer service, being organised – all skills the role needs, and Wendi definitely has! She’s worked with us for three years, helping to drive the business forward with fresh ideas, working with colleagues across the business. “I love working with my colleague Santa, she is so easy to get along with and has great work ethics, which means I never worry about the branch when I’m away from it,” Wendi said. “It’s a blessing if you make friends at work!  I also thoroughly enjoy meeting the customers too, it’s fabulous to build up a rapport with them.”

A career as a vet wasn’t on the cards for Barbara Brazil – she wanted to be a rock star. If only she could sing. But the music world’s loss is our gain. Barbara has worked at McCarthy’s for 10 years, initially as the manager of the Business Centre and now as Area Manager for Storage World. She looks after our three self-storage facilities in Leeds, Harrogate and Wakefield and still retains responsibility for our serviced offices. Just a small role then! When we asked her what she enjoyed about her job she said: “There is never a dull moment! Being a family owned business you get the opportunity to get involved in all sorts of different projects – there is no such thing as ‘that’s not my job’. I need a variety of skills and characteristics to enable me to carry out my role effectively, but most of all I’m tenacious and I care about my fellow colleagues and our customers.”

They are just a snapshot of the women who currently make up the McCarthy’s team and we want to take the chance to say thank you to them all.

Finally, we asked some of the team for their advice to women looking to find the right job for them, or starting out in their professional life, and here’s some words of wisdom…

“The only person stopping you is you.”

“Don’t take no for an answer, challenge and question things.”

“Never talk about a problem without trying to offer a solution.”

“Enjoy every day and make sure you are happy in your work life as you spend a lot of time there!”

“Life is too short, so do something you love and you will never work a day in your life.”

Extremely great service

5 Stars

Overall safe and effective storage although my unit occasionally leaked when it rained. The continual fee increases during Covid were unacceptable and my complaints received no reply. Compulsory insurance issued by McCarthys is another rip off factor.

Brilliant overall experience will definitely recommend and use again
