All for a good cause – can we offer you a helping hand?

Nov 20, 2019 | Moving

Here at McCarthy’s we like to try to help those amazing charities and organisations which are doing their bit to improve the world for us all. In fact, you may remember that last year in honour of our 50th birthday, we set about doing ‘50 good deeds’ – helping out with all manner of things from collecting items for charity and sponsored sleeping on the streets to volunteering our time to provide a much needed extra pair of hands. But our good deeds didn’t come to an end on 31st December!

We’re always happy to hear from charities which might need some support, so do feel free to get in touch. We have self storage units in Leeds, Harrogate and Wakefield and as a company we also offer removals and man and van services.

Our storage centres have units of varying shapes and sizes which can be accessed as and when you need them. Only you hold the key, and the storage centres are kept secure with pin code entry, CCTV and remote monitoring – along with staff on site 6 days a week. We have ample car parking at all of our three sites, so you can unload with ease. There’s also all kinds of equipment, as well as the usual trolleys and lifts, which we can use to help you get your items to your unit if they’re particularly big or awkward!

Here are some of the charities we’re currently working with:

  • Yorkshire Air Ambulance – This amazing Yorkshire charity provides a rapid response air emergency service to a population of approximately 5 million people across 4 million acres. It needs a staggering £12,000 a day to keep both of its two ambulances in the air. We provide a unit to store fundraising materials at our Harrogate branch.
  • St Gemma’s Hospice – every year we help St Gemma Hospice, in Leeds, with their fantastic Christmas Tree collection service. People pay to have their Christmas trees collected and we provide manpower and a van to help pick them up and take them off to be recycled. This year they collected 1400 trees across Leeds and raised £20,000 to help fund their vital work as the largest hospice in Yorkshire. Not only that – it helped save trees from landfill and the chippings used for pathways in parks or woods, or parts of the tree could be used as soil conditioner or weed suppressant. A very green Christmas Tree!
  • Homeless Hampers – A non-profit making organisation, the fantastic Homeless Hampers has been running for four years in Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield. They rely solely on volunteers, donations and self-funding to do their very important work – providing food, clothes and other essentials for those sleeping on the streets. We provide the charity with a storage unit in Leeds – and we’re hoping to go and lend some helping hands over the coming months.
  • Zikomo Trust – The Zikomo Trust supports orphans, vulnerable children and the elderly in Malawi, through education, healthcare and community support. Malawi, which is home to 16 million people, is one of the poorest countries in the world with a GDP per capita of just $1.35 a day. We regularly run collections of toys and books at Wakefield which are sent over to Malawi – so please feel free to pop anything in which would be suitable.

As Homeless Hampers say #ItsNicetobeNice. Let us know if you think we could lend your charity a helping hand…
