How self storage can help with a spot of bank holiday DIY

Aug 19, 2019 | Moving

As we approach the last bank holiday before Christmas (now that is a scary prospect!), plans are being made across the country. Trips to the seaside, barbecues with friends and family… or the traditional bank holiday treat of DIY!

A bit of extra time can be the perfect opportunity to get cracking with those home improvements you’ve been trying to get started for months. Or possibly even years.

But if you are tackling some home renovations – take care. Research from www.MyJobQuote.co.uk revealed that one in six Brits have injured themselves whilst doing a spot of DIY in the home – with accidents in the home costing the NHS more than £200 million a year.

According to the NHS the most common accident is falling from a ladder – accounting for 6,372 hospital admissions annually. That’s followed by injuries caused by drills and other power tools – which sound pretty gruesome and leads to 4,800 admissions per year. Lawnmowers are also a liability – landing 519 people a year in hospital – so even gardening isn’t safe!

But if that’s not enough to put you off, and the lure of Marie Kondo (or DIY SOS if we’re talking more major renovations) is still strong, then have you considered how self storage may be able to help?

Lots of customers come to us ahead of home renovations, to help create the space they need to crack on with the jobs they have in mind. If you’re painting and decorating, clearing out items somewhere safe can make it so much easier. Knocking through a wall? No worries – empty the rooms into temporary self storage. Fitting a new kitchen? Rather than living round boxes full of pots, pans, sandwich toasters and your best crockery, pop things into a storage unit. With garage and loft conversions all the rage as people look to maximise the space they have, self storage can be an ideal solution.

At McCarthy’s our storage centres are super flexible. Hire the space you need for the time you need. Your items are kept safe and secure and the building is accessed by individual pin code and only you have the key to your unit. Each of our three centres – Leeds, Harrogate and Wakefield (with York due to open in 2020) – are conveniently located near major roads and with plenty of free car parking. You can come and go as you like to access your belongings – so if you suddenly realise you need something back, it’s not a problem. With prices starting from just £6 a week, it’s a cost effective way to help you get some space while you create the home you’ve always wanted.

And if your DIY-ing is ahead of a planned house move – we happen to know a pretty good removal firm we’d recommend too…!
